I am a big fan of all of Jay McLean’s books, so I was beyond excited when Combative came out. Boy- she really stepped out of her comfort zone and wrote a completely different story than I would have expected from her! Combative is one of those books that you want to go into blind, so don’t get curious and go hunting around for spoilers on Goodreads. This book contains secrets and a mysterious type of plot, that needs to be revealed in due time. I will warn you that the story ends in a cliffhanger. Had I known this going in, I might have waited to read it.

Kyler “Ky” Parker had a rough childhood. One of the only bright sides was his friendship with Jackson, who became more like family to him than just a friend. After drifting apart, they are reunited when Kyler is arrested after a brutal bar fight. Now a detective, Jackson needs a favor from Kyler and makes a deal with him to keep him out of jail. He wants him to help bring down a drug dealer by going undercover in a fighting ring. Ky agrees because he “needs to fight” to help calm the demons from his past. Meeting Madison, his new neighbor is something he never expected and although she is a distraction he doesn’t need, he can’t seem to stay away from her. Madison Haynes is a ball of mystery wrapped up in a child-like innocence. She appears to have no idea how to survive in the outside world, and as the reader we have no idea about her past or why she is the way she is.

That’s about all I can say about this book without giving away more of the plot. This is a suspenseful, love story that left me wanting more. Thankfully Jay McLean had mercy on us and didn’t leave her readers completely hanging. There is an excerpt from book 2 at the end of this book and I don’t think we will have too long to wait for the next book.
