Deacon has an ugly history, a history that broke him, leaving him a ghost of a man. Out of necessity, he left the normal world to descend into the criminal world and found he fit. So he stayed. Cold as ice and living off the grid, Deacon has no intention to connect, not with anyone. Then he returns to some remote cabins in the Colorado Mountains and finds they have new owners. One of them is Cassidy Swallow, a young woman willing to work hard to live her quiet dream in a house by a river surrounded by aspen and pine. Suddenly, Deacon finds he’s at war. Cassidy’s pull for him to connect is strong. He fights it, but he loses, always coming back for more. But when he does, he gives her nothing. From the first time she sees him, Cassidy knows Deacon is dead inside. She knows he’s the kind of man who could destroy a woman. But one night when Deacon’s control slips, Cassidy takes a chance. He might break her. He also might be her dream come true.
Let me start this review off by saying that I am a HUGE Kristen Ashley fan – although I am a huge fan of hers, the Unfinished Heroes series was always my least favorite of all her books. I always had a hard time really connecting with the male leads and just never ended up LOVING the book…UNTIL NOW!! I absolutely 100% fell in love with Deacon and seriously couldn’t put the book down. Thank you Kristen for making me love one of the Unfinished Heroes!!
Why did I love Deacon so much more than Knight, Creed, or Raid? Well…I have to say Deacon just totally spoke to me. The way that he cared for Cassidy and showed it in ways people wouldn’t normally pick up on completely touched my heart.
“He scared the heck out of me. But this was only part of the reason he scared the heck out of me. The other part, the bigger part, was even feeling all that, I had a nearly-overwhelming urge to go to him and wrap my arms around him. Tight. And maybe never let go. For eternity.”
If you’ve read a KA book before then you are completely used to the normal flow of her stories and the ups and downs, questions as to what’s going on with the hero, etc. I absolutely loved the fact that once these two were finally together there were no second guesses in my mind if they were going to stay strong. The way that these two showed their love for each other while Deacon worked his ass off to protect his other life from EVER touching Cassidy just completely made the book for me.
“Heart and soul, gut and balls, I love you. There’s no one I’d rather hold. Not until I’m eighty. Not until the day I die.”
Cassidy was such a strong character – I loved the fact that she had this massive goal in her life and she wasn’t going to let anyone stand in her way. Not only was she super young when she started making her dreams come true but she was states away from her family, her boyfriend who she thought was going to go the distance turned out to be a complete douche. Her strength, want, and her ability to push through the hard times really made me connect with her.
Not only was I able to connect with the characters in the way they treated each other and the way they handled their dreams, I absolutely 100% connected with them through their banter that had me smirking throughout the entire book.
“If we have daughters I’m starting How to Deal with Badasses when they’re five.”
His eyes were lit but his expression was full-on tender when he returned, “We have boys, they get How to Deal with Stubborn Bitches Who Argue About Meaningless Shit starting at three.”
“Again, women dislike being called bitches,” I shot back.
“That’ll be part of my lesson to the boys.”
That’s all I’m going to say about this book, I really truly believe that everyone needs to experience Deacon – especially since I ended up LOVING this book when I haven’t absolutely loved any of the other books in the Unfinished Heroes series!
#1 Knight • #2 Creed • #3 Raid • #4 Deacon
Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.
Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).
Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.
And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.
