They say love and hate are the same feelings experienced under different circumstances, and it’s true. The man who comes to me in my dreams also haunts me in my nightmares. He is a brilliant lawyer. A skilled criminal. A beautiful liar. A bully and a savior, a monster and a lover.
Ten years ago, he made me run away from the small town where we lived. Now, he came for me in New York, and he isn’t leaving until he takes me with him.
She is a starving artist. Pretty and evasive like cherry blossom. Ten years ago, she barged into my life unannounced and turned everything upside down. She paid the price. Emilia LeBlanc is completely off-limits, my best friend’s ex-girlfriend. The woman who knows my darkest secret, and the daughter of the cheap Help we hired to take care of our estate. That should deter me from chasing her, but it doesn’t. So she hates me. Big fucking deal.
She better get used to me.
Vicious by L.J. Shen is the last book I’ll finish in 2016. I’m super pleased to say that Vicious capped off a fabulous year of reading with a BANG!
I’d heard great things of LJ’s writing but hadn’t read any of her works. As soon as I read the synopsis for Vicious I one-clicked it without any hesitation. I picked it up for a few minutes and was completely sucked into the storyline.
This book had a many things I look for in a book I dub “Kindle Crack”. First off, I love a good enemies-to-lovers story. I also love a book with sexual chemistry that almost sets my Kindle on phone (and this one was pretty close). And lastly, the book has to keep me from not wanting to put it down, to ignore everything around me, and it totally worked. I refused to go to bed until I finished it.
This book is told in past and present tense. The reader meets Vicious and Emilia while they are attending All Saints High School. Vicious is part of the HotHoles (a group of the hottest guys in high school). All the guys want to be Vic and all the girls want to sleep with him. He of course only has eyes for Emilia yet never lets himself have her. Instead he treated her like absolute garbage, think pulling pigtails but ten times worse. Eventually he banishes her out of California by way of blackmail. In the present they meet again and Vic can’t help himself but intrude into Emilia’s life. At first it was just to get over his obsession with her…but obviously feelings get in the way. There were a bunch of twists and turns in this one that the reader should encounter first hand. I love how the story turned out.
“It was always fucking us and you know it.”
I am not usually a fan of anti-heroes. You know, the hero that’s such a complete ass that you are so to turned off by him. That should’ve been Vicious. He was such a jerk for the majority of the book. But then you have certain moments where your heart breaks for him. And yeah, not going to lie, he made me a bit hot at times. Girls are always attracted to the bad boys, right?!
Emilia wore the weight of the world or really the weight of her family obligations on her shoulders. Working two jobs to barely make ends meet and to make sure her sick sister has a roof over her head and meds. When her life-long crush gives her an opportunity, how can she say no?
“Lust is when you want the person to make you feel good. Love is when you want to make the other person feel good.”
The chemistry between these two is incredible in both the past and present. There were a few scenes that I may have reread a few times (wink, wink).
If you’re looking for THAT book to cap your year off with, look no further…
Ask me what I want, LJ.
I want the next book in the series now, please!
