Hockey star Alexander Crossman has a reputation as a cold-hearted player on and off the rink. Pushed into the sport by an alcoholic father, Alex isn’t afraid to give fans the proverbial middle finger, relishing his role as the MVP they love to hate. Management, however, isn’t so amused. Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy . . . not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves.
As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people—like Alex, who’s been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the team’s effort to clean up his image. What she doesn’t expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips to stir her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn’t one to cross professional boundaries—and besides, Alex doesn’t do relationships . . . or does he? The more she sees behind Alex’s bad-boy façade, the more Sutton craves the man she uncovers.
Hockey star Alex Crossman is known as the league’s MVP. Don’t get this mistaken, he’s the Most Valuable Prick, not Most Valuable Player. He’s an ass on and off the ice and he has no qualms about it.
When his team’s management demands that he do some community outreach to change his image via a drug awareness program, he is forced to reevaluate his life.
Sutton Price is the drug counselor who will be helping him clean up his image and co-spearheading the drug awareness program. She is completely different than all the other women that Alex’s ever met. Immediately, he is drawn to her and cannot shake it.
Both Sutton and Alex come from households where drug/dependency is an issue. They also both were survivors of abuse in their childhoods. Where Sutton has accepted it and made something of herself, Alex is still stuck in self-hatred and self-loathing mode.
Together they start a relationship where Alex’s strong alpha-male side comes out. But Sutton does an incredible job thawing out his icy exterior and helping him clean up his image. Together the two are combustible; their chemistry was sky-high.
I really enjoyed this story until about 80% when Alex took a turn for the worse. I was mad at the way he over-reacted and then how Sutton reacted. For coming across strong throughout the book, I felt that she should’ve been stronger when Alex had a momentary lapse of judgment. Instead, I felt as if she came off very weak and not herself. Alex on the other hand made me so mad…he was an idiot and had he been in front of me, I would’ve slapped him across the face. BUT….all was forgotten during one of the most romantic scenes I’ve ever read. I’m going to refer to it as the “game-changer” scene. All was forgiven in Alex-land after that scene. When you get there, you will know what I am talking about.
If you are looking for a fun, sexy, book, I recommend this one. I need to start paying attention to NHL, hockey players are “it” guys! I can’t wait for Garrett’s story out in February.
“She’ll always be first.
Above all else.
