Genres: Love & Romance

Welcome to the City, London’s most prestigious square mile, where finance reigns and Oliver King is a rising prince. I used to rule the world. There might be wolves on Wall Street, but there were crocodiles in Canary Wharf. Some of us craved money. Some of us craved power. I liked money, and power had its advantages, but what I really wanted was to excel, to surpass the men who came before me. I never cared much for love and romance until I met Alexis. I could feel it the very moment she walked into the interview, with her outspoken charm and vivacious personality. She cast all the others in shadow, made me laugh when life held no humour. Our friendship should have remained professional, but it wasn’t long before the lines started to blur. You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men? Well, I never foresaw where my plans would lead, and only in my darkest hour did I finally see the light…

You can have all the money and prestige in the world and still be the poorest man alive. And love, well, I hate to use a tired old cliché, but love can be the thing that truly sets you free.

Be still my heart LH Cosway, you’ve taken my breath away again; King of Hearts was heart-wrenchingly beautiful!!

We met Oliver King in Hearts of Fire, but truth be told, I had a completely different picture of him. I for some reason had pictured him to be a lot older and not the debonair man he used to be.

This story is told in two different times, the past and the present. The past is where you see the true Oliver King in his glory. Six years later, Oliver is a broken man who will break your heart.

“I could lose the run of myself inside a woman like you, Alexis.”

Six years ago, Oliver King was on top of the financial world. He was the sexiest most driven man which made him that much more successful. He is also the the sort of man who does not have time in his life for any sort of relationships.  Alexis Martin changes that the second she walks into his office to interview for an assistant position. Oliver is so charmed by her as well as her looks that she is hired almost immediately. What blossoms between them is such a witty, fun, tension-filled budding relationship that I seriously could’ve read a whole book about it. The rouse that Alexis tried to keep up with him to ensure that they did not hook-up was absolutely hysterical. Obviously her “tells” weren’t a well-kept secret that she could keep hidden.

“And I fear if I made you my queen, I could no longer be a king.”

When they do get together, their love affair is nothing short of epic. Unfortunately, they are torn apart suddenly and Alexis is left in the dust.  In the wake of his departure, Alexis has become the woman that Oliver told her she could be. Oliver on the other hand has floundered and become an alcoholic and a somewhat mean man traveling with the circus. When a chance meeting brings them together, it’s her strength that sets him back on the right path and back to her.

This was not an easy read. The first part was all sorts of swooniness and sexiness. The second part is where the pieces were dropped and you saw Oliver King as he is in the present. The sadness, guilt, and alcohol has done a number on his psyche and it really took a miracle to bring him back to the person he once was. That miracle? Alexis! She is just one hell of a heroine. Obviously, all Alexis’ are like that as I swear LH wrote this character after me. Just kidding, but honestly, she was my favorite part of the book. Her humor was absolutely to die for. Her strength and determination also made her that much more amazing. I was fighting for them until the very end and was rewarded with a beautiful love story.

“Sometimes we see someone and they just suit us. They’re beautiful to us in every way. You’re that person to me.”

I really enjoyed this book, it brought some light tears to my eyes but I expect no less from LH as I adore her books. The writing was flawless with just the right amount of humor, angst, and sexiness. This technically could be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend you read all the books in this series-they are all amazing!
