In this New Adult debut by Robin York, a college student is attacked online and must restore her name—and stay clear of a guy who’s wrong for her, but feels so right.
When Caroline Piasecki’s ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn’t look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear, hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defense and punches her ex to the ground. West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he’s shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger—even after promising her dad she’ll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works. They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they’re “just friends,” their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself—and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her.
When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.
I guess I should start with how scary revenge porn is and how people really need to be educated on the topic and understand the ramifications it can have on your life. Whatever you or someone else posts on the internet can literally come back to haunt you. This story tore me up because the main character, Caroline literally did not do anything wrong yet she was a victim of such a horrid crime. This book also had the bad-boy meets good girl type of relationship, but it was so much more than that.
Caroline is a privileged girl with goals, she has her entire future laid out for her. That is, until her fucko of an ex-boyfriend leaks private photos that tarnish her image and threaten to damage her future. The photos are absolutely awful and I can’t even imagine how someone could possibly face this kind of blow to their image. She let Nate (her fucko ex) take these photos because she loved him and thought she was doing the right thing. The betrayal alone would have set me on some sort of downward spiral, but not Caroline. Somehow Caroline finds the strength to stand up on her own, stay in school, and start hanging out with a different crowd. There are still the voices in her head that keep her down and make her believe that guys are only interested in her for one reason…what they saw in the pictures.
“I wanted you from the minute I saw you. I want you right now and you can barely stand me. I can barely stand me, so I don’t know why you put up with my shit, but even right now, when I hate myself and you’re pissed at me, I still want to push you down on the bed and take off your shirt and get inside you. Get deep inside you, and then deeper, until I’m so deep I don’t even know what’s me anymore and what’s you.”
Then there is West, the bad boy who really is just a misunderstood good guy. He really had a crappy upbringing. His dad left his mom at early age but still comes back into town every now and again and ends up breaking his mom’s heart every time and sometimes beats the crap out of West at the same time. Then there is his sister Frankie who is a lot younger than him and is the most important thing to him. He wants the best for his mom and sister and from a very early age sets out to provide for them with some seriously shady jobs. Now in college he is working not 1, but technically 3 jobs still trying to keep his family with food on the table. He has no time for relationships nor does he want them especially after seeing how his mom suffered from unrequited love.
I think maybe I’ve always waiting for him. Always. I don’t know how I’m ever going to be able to stop.
From the moment Caroline and West meet the first day of college they had that physical pulls towards each other. But at the time, Caroline was with Nate so they both pined from each other from afar. It wasn’t until West literally beat Nate one day after class that Caroline and West stumbled upon their “non-friendship” friendship. What I loved about this book is that you literally could feel the longing, hurt, and need that both of them were feeling. I love the emotional journey that these two took together. Caroline was able to move on from what Nate did to her while West finally let go and took a leap of faith on Caroline. When the two of them finally get together it is nothing short of explosive, it was HOT!! Wow…West had quite the mouth him as well.
I’m in shock that this is Robin’s debut novel, it was that good. I must warn you that this is the first book in a series…and you have to wait until July for Harder. Yes, I am that depressed too. I could literally put this book down and will be counting down the months.
“It’s deeper or nothing. So make up your mind.“
