Within these walls, he became my solace, my sanctuary and my strength.

I am not strong. I am just a survivor of circumstance.

Isn’t that what we all do? Survive?

Each of us has our own set of circumstances to muddle through. Mine are just more…complicated.

Born with a severe heart defect, I’ve seen the inside of a hospital room more than my own bedroom.

I was drowning, a prisoner to the illness that owned me, until he appeared. He thinks he’s blocked out the world with his tattoos and hard exterior, but I see the real Jude, the one he so desperately wants to forget.

But is he the answer to my prayers or will he break my already damaged heart forever?

My name is Lailah Buchanan, and this is our story of hope, redemption and sacrificing it all for the one you love.

Within These Walls is completely different from JL’s other books. It is a standalone that is mostly based within the confines of a hospital. It’s a completely different approach to a love story.

Both Lailah and Jude are stuck within the hospital’s walls but for completely different reasons. Lailah has been in and out of the hospital since childbirth from a heart defect. Jude is also stuck there, mentally not physically. When these two form a friendship they both end up saving each other and growing together.

Since Lailah’s been born, her mom has completely sheltered her even as far as home schooling. I think in many ways she is her twenty-two year old self but she is also a bit naïve to the world, as she hasn’t experienced anything a normal person her age would’ve. It was actually a bit sad to see what she’s missed out on and what everyone else takes for granted. Lailah has her over version of a Bucket List, hers aptly called a Someday List and it’s a very large one. It’s even sadder that she doesn’t have a friend except for the super sweet nurse, Grace.

“We all have scars, Lailah. Some are just more visible than others.”

Jude is your tortured soul to the max. Reeling from an accident that kept him in perpetual mourning, he’s shed his old life and works at the last place where his life was once complete; the hospital. Working his way up from a janitor to now a CNA he is literally just getting by. He doesn’t speak to anyone except for Lailah’s doctor, Dr. Marcus. I felt really bad for Jude…his guilt was literally suffocating him to the point of non-existence. It’s weird to say, but I actually connected with Jude more then Lailah.

Once Jude sneaks a peak of Lailah eating chocolate pudding with no inhibitions at all, it is done. From that point on, he sneaks a cup each night to her room each night until he is caught. From that point on, they spark a friendship that becomes more. While Lailah helps Jude overcome is guilt and see through it, he helps Lailah slowly tick away items off of her Someday List. I was a bit taken aback by the insta-love factor of this book. But then again, I am not a fan of insta-love and complexly shy away from books that have it. I think in Lailah’s case I understood it more, but it was a bit quick for Jude especially for all that he’s been through. I wish we had gotten a little bit more of Dr. Marcus and Lailah’s mom I really enjoyed that part of the story.

If you love a story of healing, and redemption, definitely check this one out
