A mistake made long ago…
Pain buried so deep…
When Bailey Trent returns home to her small little Ozark mountain town after being away for nearly six years, she knows she’ll face the ghosts of her past. It does not mean she’s prepared to come face to face with the cruelest of those memories.
Darren Cory’s life is a shell of what it once was, and when he’s forced to endure the cause of his agony, hatred abounds quickly. But hating Bailey destroys him too.
Can Darren find a way to move past the pain and forgive the woman he once cared so much for before his anger consumes them both? Or will he drag them into the hell of an unforgiven past.
This book has pretty much broken my heart and made me want to reach for the closest glass of wine. I can’t remember a book that has made my heart hurt as much as this one. I mean..I am a huge angst lover but wow, this one packed a serious punch.
After being gone for six years, Bailey is back home after paying penance for a tragic accident that changed not just her but many others. When she comes face-to-face with Darren, the boy she fell in love with so many years ago. Unfortunately, Darren’s life was changed that night and he now holds Bailey solely responsible and ultimately makes her pay for it on so many levels.
“You don’t fall in love with the person responsible for your greatest loss. And God help you if you do.”
The thing is, Darren too was in love with Bailey all those years ago. When he is faced with her again all those feelings come rushing back along with the hate he has for her. Instead of trying to forgive her, he becomes this cruel monster and with every step forward, takes two steps back. I wish that Darren had realized that not only he, but Bailey suffered a severe loss and perhaps she has more than enough guilt to feel for the both of them. The way that he treated her was just downright cruel and literally chipped away at my heart. Every. Single. Time. But at the same time, he was also struggling with being in love with the one person that he shouldn’t be in love with.
“You will always be my world.”
Bailey was just such a strong character in my opinion. She dished back the “words” that Darren threw at her. She was also immune to the town being awful to her as well. But she didn’t hide, she kept her head up and accepted it. I am just not so sure that I would’ve been able to have moved back and faced all the townspeople. She was also able to move passed what happened and put herself on the way to recovery. It was an honest mistake that happened but one that she’ll have to live with for the rest of her life.
“Convince me not to hate you because… because hating you is the end of me.”
When they do succumb to the pull…these two are so flipping hot. The author writes some of the sexiest scenes I’ve ever read. They are sensual and erotic. Plus, Bailey and Darren have such amazing chemistry. You can tell just from reading their heated exchanges.
I really enjoyed this story. This one will definitely stick with me for awhile and will be one that I definitely recommend if someone is looking for an angsty-read.
