Love burns hotter the second time around…

Two years ago, the medical world was shaken by scandal, and Payton Daniels's family was at the center of it. The second she graduated, Payton left everything behind―her high school sweetheart, her family, and the controversy surrounding her mother's death—and hid within the anonymity of college. But Payton’s ex, Blake Hiller, hasn't forgiven her for leaving, and when he enrolls in the same medical ethics class, she panics. She can’t run the risk of him telling everyone who she really is.

As if being at the same university isn’t enough, both Blake and Payton land the same internship. Forced together, their passion for each other reignites, but when Payton is asked to testify in her father’s high-profile trial, she must choose between risking her acceptance into medical school to help her father, and losing every connection to her past—including the only guy she’s ever loved.

Alexis says…

Unethical is Jennifer Blackwood’s debut novel.  To be honest, I didn’t really know what I was getting into when I started reading except that it was a possible second-chance love story.  What I didn’t expect was for Jennifer to help raise awareness for a topic that some might deem controversial.

Payton is returning home back to California after fleeing to Florida for anonymity for her junior year in college. Payton’s family had been torn apart by a public scandal that not only shook the medical world changed her family.  Now back in California studying pre-med, she plans on focusing all of her time studying and making sure no one finds out who she really is.  Of course her best friend and roommate, Jules brings her a bit out of her shell and drags her along to a party where she runs into her ex, Blake.  Blake was her first love and the one person she needed to help her through the terrible tragedy. Unfortunately, a couple of misunderstandings lends itself to complete this addictive story.  Can they get through their differences?  Will Payton’s world come crashing down if people find out who she really is?

Unethical was a fun and sweet read for me.  I thought that the writing was perfect and to be honest, I’m a bit shocked that this is Jennifer’s first novel.  This book does not read like a first-time novel whatsoever.  I loved that we were able to get both Blake and Payton’s POV, and I think it helped with the character development throughout the book.  Blake and Payton of course had great chemistry and you knew that these two were supposed to be together.

I was a bit bothered by Payton’s reaction to her father.  I was hoping that it wasn’t going to take as long her to understand exactly why he did what he did.  I was also a bit mad with how easily she was able to dismiss Blake.  Blake was an incredible guy…no joke.  He put up with a lot, especially in the form of his yucky roommate Andrew.  Seriously, I still have the creeps from that dude.  I wished for a bit of a longer epilogue as well, I just wanted a little bit more closure.

This was a solid debut from Jennifer Blackwood.  I commend her for tackling such a debatable topic and shedding some very positive light on it. I can’t wait to read her next book!
