I was ordinary. Nice. He was extraordinary. And he wasn’t always nice.
Moody and difficult, brilliant and beautiful, Kes scared me and he protected me. He could be incredibly hurtful and incredibly thoughtful. He wasn’t perfect, but he was perfect for me. He challenged me, he took me out of my safe little box and showed me the world could be magnificent. He was everything I wasn’t.
Aimee Anderson is ten when the traveling carnival first comes to her nice little town. She doesn’t expect her world to change so completely. But meeting Kestrel Donohue puts her life on a different path.
Even though she only sees him for the two weeks of the year when he passes through her home town, his friendship is the most important of her life. As a child’s friendship grows to adult love, the choices become harder, and both Kes and Aimee realize that two weeks a year will never be enough.
Have you ever read a story that was just interesting? It has been so long since I have read a book that just captured me with the details. The plot just ran along seamlessly- I really enjoyed the heck out of this book for so many reasons. I find it almost hard to put into words, something so different yet the same…………..
The beginning and first half of the book opens up with Aimee and her excitement over attending the carnival on her tenth birthday. Here she will meet a young carnie named Kes and a suitable friendship will ensue that spans 7 years. Never did Aimee imagine the turn her life would take from that one chance meeting.
What was once a childhood friendship turns into teen love, until Aimee’s disapproving parents step in and bring her hopes crashing down. Completely out of touch and unable to reach Kes- Aimee continues forward with the motions of life, but never forgetting her childhood love.
A second chance meeting when attending a carnival with her nephew, Aimee knows immediately that she will fall right back into Kes’ arms with no more than the crook of his finger. As all their long ago but never forgotten feelings and emotions come returning to the surface, Kes gets Aimee to join him on the road traveling the carnival circuit for the summer. Aimee finds herself questioning whether she should return back to the life she has been just simply living or should she stay and truly live for the first time……………..
