It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents’ house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. Yet we saw something in each other that would link us in ways that couldn’t be broken...no matter how hard we tried.

I loved Manning before I knew the meaning of the word. I was too young, he said. I would wait. Through all the carefully-chosen words hiding what we knew to be true, through his struggle to keep me innocent, and through infinitely-starry nights—I would wait. But I’d learn that life isn’t always fair. That no matter how much you achieve, none of it matters if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first, that didn’t matter. My older sister saw him next.

Alexis says…

Jessica, thank you for bringing me back to my teenage years. Through Something in the Way, I relieved my high school years through Lake.

Lake is sixteen years old and living in her sister Tiffany’s shadow. Her father has made it his mission to make sure she following in his footsteps by making sure she sticks to a rigorous schedule made up of classes and reading.

That is until the fateful day that she meets Manning, the twenty-three year old construction worker next door.

Manning is the first boy (well technically a man) that has sparked something deep inside Lake. And for Manning, Lake gives him back the innocence that reminds him of his painful past.

Unfortunately her older sister Tiffany swoops in and claims him. Well, claim is a strong word because Manning doesn’t really allow himself to be fully claimed by Tiffany.

Something in the Way completely captivated me and held my attention the entire time. It had my heart racing trying to see how this forbidden romance would play out.  One scene in particular has been on my mind all day.

My heart broke for Lake and Manning. These two should be together, yet Lake’s age was huge roadblock understandably.   And then there was Tiffany. Though I wasn’t really a fan of her, at times you catch a glimpse of a girl behind all the vanity.

“It wasn’t fair. I’d seen him first. I’d had him first.”

Jessica did an impeccable job with writing this one. You feel the want, the need, and the hesitation. The references to the mid-90s were on-point. The music alone was making me want to pull out my old CDs.  This book was definitely a slow-burn but to truly capture the story I think that’s the only way it could’ve played out.

I’m now waiting not so patiently to see how this saga will play out in the next two books.

This story. That ending.
