The only sure way to destroy a man is to take what he cannot live without.

Three years ago, I had everything.

A beautiful wife.
A son.
A reason for living.

Until a ruthless task force, assembled under Mayor Michael Culling, with a brutal strategy to make the streets of Detroit ‘safe’, ripped away everything I loved in a deadly hunt called The Culling.

They tried to kill me, too. I wish they had. Now I'm cursed by the memories of that night, and the words I whispered to my dying wife.

A promise—to avenge the wrong and set it right.

I’m no longer Nick Ryder. I’m a masked vigilante. Faceless. Loveless. Fearless. A man with nothing left to lose—one who's seen the dark and violent truth behind the city’s flawless veneer.

Michael Culling doesn’t know who I am. Or what I want. All he knows is that I’ve kidnapped his beautiful wife.

An eye for an eye—isn’t that how the saying goes? And Aubree Culling is the perfect pawn to destroy him.

If she doesn’t destroy me first.

Keri Lake had me falling in love with her even before I started the book. Two words…Author’s Letter. Keri mentioned that she is a show vs. tell author and I will assure you, she definitely showed us this book. I felt everything while reading this one it had me going in all sorts of directions.

I knew this book was going to be dark before I began to read it. I was honestly very nervous that I wasn’t going to like it even.  But as soon as I started reading it, I could not put it down.

Nick is on a mission to exact revenge on the one man who ruined his life.  How do you hurt the man who took everything from you? You kidnap the one thing that is very important to him…his wife.  Now, that is all I will say about the actual storyline because there is so much more but I don’t want to spoil it for you.  With the backdrop of a crime-ridden Detroit, this was the perfect mystery with a slew of twists and turns that will keep you reading with bated breath until the last page.

“I’ve got you.”

Both Nick and Aubree are damaged. Both have suffered awful losses and had atrocious things happen to them. Yet, they both don’t come off as victims.  I honestly am not sure whose story was worse. They are for all intents and purposes, survivors.  They survived the circumstances that brought them to where they are today.  They are both incredibly strong and have you rooting for them the entire time.  Plus, as you know, Nick is seeking revenge for the person who wronged him.  The scenes where he is taking down all these people were just wow…I swear I could almost picture them as the author painted such a picture.

“Eye for an eye, heart for a heart.”

I should mention that this book is very gruesome. The scenes in which Nick is avenging his revenge are pretty brutal and not for the faint of heart. There are also scenes that involve Aubree that are just equally disturbing. Keri Lake did a tremendous job with this book. This book pretty much took me on one hell of a ride.  I also want to say that I loved the epilogue and it really completed the story.  This is type of book that should have Clint Eastwood directing the movie adaptation.
