“In its purest form love is self-sacrificing, eternal, selfless, enduring, truthful, forgiving and indulgent. It also feels a lot like a kick to the stomach when you try to fight it.”
All Everleigh Carsen wanted to do was complete her final semester at Hensley University and begin the life she carefully planned.
When a wave of violent crime seizes campus, Everleigh is persuaded to attend a school sponsored self-defense seminar by her best friend, where she meets volunteer instructor, Hunter Charles. After Everleigh’s biting sarcasm induces Hunter to eject her from class, a tempestuous relationship is born.
Everleigh is determined to forget the striking man, but fate-that fickle shrew-continuously intervenes. Unable to escape him, she declares Hunter an enemy combatant. The only complication…Hunter is resolutely pursuing vindication…by any means necessary. Verbal warfare ensues, and despite Everleigh’s ingenious efforts, in Hunter, she has finally found her equal.
Only For You is a compelling tale of friendship, desire, and redemption-brimming with intelligent characters, witty dialogue, unexpected twists, profound sorrow, unfettered hope, and love’s unassailable perseverance.
Stunned…Amazed…and in love. Yep, that is how I feel about Only For You by Genna Rulon. I was skeptical at first going in because this was the author’s first novel. But, I have to say that Ms. Rulon totally knocked this book out of the ballpark. From her attention getting first page, her wit, to the ultimate, awesome conclusion, that was a show stopper for me. I used to read a lot of mystery novels and still do every once in awhile, but they don’t seem to hold my interest nearly as much as a good romance novel. Well, this book had both romance and a freaking awesome thrill ride and I loved how it all came together at the end. I had so many theories running around in my head and could not wait to see if at least one of them panned out.
This story takes places on the Hensley University campus where there are a string of violent attacks on the female population that keeps escalating. To keep the morale up, Hensley University offers a self-defense course. That is where Everleigh (Ev) and her bestie Sam meet Hunter, the course instructor. Right from the start, Ev and Hunter end up bickering and she is subsequently kicked out of class. To make it worse, Hunter ends up in her Business Strategy class and that is where the fun begins. These two have insane chemistry and their exchanges are hysterical. After coming to a VERY wrong conclusion (this part was so funny even down to her blaring Lady Gaga after her epiphany) about Hunter, she starts a crusade for him to become the Third Musketeer to her and Sam. Through the course of the semester, her and Hunter become very close but never cross that friendship line even though they both want to SO bad and I wanted them to as well. The way their friendship unfolds is undoubtedly beautiful and there is no doubt that you will fall in love with these characters. In the background, the attacks become more and more frequent and worse in nature. You will meet a bunch of characters that will have you guessing their true intentions the entire time. I don’t want to SPOIL this book for anyone, so I’m not giving out any more details.
To say I really liked this book is an understatement. I have repeatedly told Stacia and Leary how much I enjoyed this book in the last few days. Trust me when I say that this book is a total gem and needs to be picked up ASAP!
I also want to mention that this author did a fantastic job with her research. She took a very difficult subject and handled it brilliantly.
Lastly, this book is part of a series but there is no cliffhanger. I can tell you that I will definitely be counting down the days until December 1st.
