When her father drags her to a new life in Wyoming, Aspen Brand doesn’t expect to fall for a cowboy named Kyle Thacker – but she does. At seventeen, Aspen and Kyle share unexpected group: guitar, running, physics. And guilt. Aspen blames herself for her mother’s car accident, while Kyle can’t find a way past his brother’s suicide.
On their first date they open up to each other, forging an unbreakable bond between them. But Kyle has spent two years living with a vicious secret – one his ex-girlfriend will do anything to protect – and sharing his truth with Aspen makes her a target. Now if Kyle is to be her love story, Aspen must first win the fight of her life.

Leary says…

This isn’t just a story dealing with high schoolers finding their other half, falling in love and living happily ever after. There are some sad moments in this story that brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t imagine going through the death of my mother at the age of seventeen. Aspen was extremely close to her mother, she was her rock, held her hand throughout life, and shared all her moments with her. I have the exact relationship with my mother and couldn’t even imagine not having her by my side after the age of seventeen.
Beware – this is an instalove story. Sometimes I like the instalove and sometimes I don’t. With Aspen and Kyle, I understood how they immediately felt something for each other since they were both dealing with horrible things in their lives. Aspen is finally able to talk about her mother’s death the first time she talks with Kyle. Seeing how strong Aspen is, Kyle feels ready to share the dark things that have been happening to him.
Things are never just rainbows and butterflies in romance stories and that’s what I love. In Painted Boots we get the horrific person named Em. She is Kyle’s ex-girlfriend and is determined from the get go to make Aspen’s life need for her to decide to now make Kyle’s life hell..she’s already been doing that for two years. My mom’s #1 motto is ‘Thank God for your mental health’ and I really truly believe that. Reading this story and having to read about Em, I kept thinking that same motto.
There are some really serious issues in this story from abuse to bullying. While experiencing these issues throughout the book we got to follow the love story of Aspen and Kyle. They truly have such a connection.
The one thing that did bug me about this book is that I would have liked a little more interaction between Kyle and Aspen before they decided they were each others world. I do enjoy instalove stories but this one needed a little more before the declaration. I thought the story was well written and kept my attention but the thoughts of wanting more before the devotion kept lingering in the back of my mind while I was reading.

About the Author

Mechelle Morrison loves language – she’s always wished she could speak and write them all. She lives for chocolate, lazy summer days, spontaneously funny things…and family. She’s sort of scared of dogs.
When she’s not reading or writing or wandering the world, she can be found in her backyard in Utah with her husband, their daughter and the bevy of quail that live behind their garage.
If she didn’t write she’d make stop motion animation shorts. So she does that anyway.
