Eight years ago, Garrett Finnegan’s world shattered the day Mia vanished from his life. He’s been struggling to pick up the pieces ever since. Haunted by memories and ghosts of the past, he chooses a solitary existence rather than risk his heart again.
Mia Emerson has made one wrong decision after another but none worse than walking away from the boy who stole her heart so long ago. When her new life is turned upside down, she finds herself returning to her roots and the hometown she left behind. Maybe now she can find a way to heal from the devastating mistakes of her past.
When a chance encounter brings these former lovers together, passion reignites in a way neither is prepared for. Can Garrett move beyond his anger and find a way to forgive? Will Mia’s insecurities and fears cause her to once again flee the life she’s destined to live?
Garrett and Mia will soon discover that they must journey into the past to find their way home.
J.L. has done it again. She has always been an automatic One-Click author for me, but she took it to the next level with Ready for You. I actually found myself crying while getting a pedicure. Yep…J.L. has now entered author crush territory.
We have met Garrett before in J.L.’s other books as he is Clare’s younger brother. But you really didn’t get to know him until this book. Right away you find out that Mia, his high school girlfriend, first love, and soulmate walked away from him 8 years ago and took his heart with her. Flash forward 8 years, Mia is back in town and completely turns his world upside down. Right off the bat, you know that Mia has some secrets she is hiding. What drove her to leave 8 years ago? Why did she decide to come back? That’s exactly what Garrett wants to know when he bumps into her at the farmer’s market. Garrett has been self-medicating with women and work to fill the void that Mia left him with. Can the two of them find the love they once had and recover from what happened when they were kids?
Throughout the story, I kept thinking that I knew where it was going and I was convinced that I had it all figured out. Was I right? NO! There were some twists that I definitely did not see coming. Those twists, made the story so much more heartbreaking but yet heartwarming at the same time. I kept rooting for Mia and Garrett to find their way back together. I wanted to make the pain they were both feeling go away. One minute you think they are headed on a path towards recoupling, then the author throws a serious wrench in the way. Then, the path is righted again to only find them at a standstill yet again. Can they find their way back to each other by letting the past go?
Some of the problems that Mia and Garret had were secrets that Mia was harboring. At one point, I wanted to have a one-on-one with her to make her let it all out. But, it was her story and I completely understand why she held onto them. Then there was Garrett who wouldn’t actually ask why she avoided talking about the past. I got a little frustrated with him because I am certain things could’ve been resolved sooner. Throughout the book you could feel the love these two characters had for each other, it was palpable. And when they got together it was just insanely HOT!
“I love you, Mia. I loved you when we were barely old enough to know what true love was. I loved you when you left me and I’ve loved you every day since. No matter what happens in our lives, that will be the one constant. I will always love you.”
I also liked that you still got some interaction between the rest of the gang from the other books. The author did a fantastic job incorporating them seamlessly into the story. I especially liked that Logan, Clare’s husband was injected into some pivotal scenes.
This book had all of my favorite things: angst, second-chance romance, hot and sexy alpha-males, and just an all-around fabulous story. I have to say this is my favorite of all her J.L.’s book and I cannot wait for the next story in this series.
