In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.

On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.

Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.

That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.

Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?

Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

Totally not going to lie, I definitely picked up this one based on the synopsis.

I knew that I’d love the writing as I am a Taylor Jenkins Reid fan to begin with…but I wasn’t prepared for the heartache that came with reading this one.

The book begins with Emma as a teenager and all of her awkwardness. During her high school years she falls in love with Jesse from afar. With a funny twist of fate, they find themselves on the wrong side of the law and end up forming a love connection. They end up falling in love with each other and eventually get married. But unfortunately before their first anniversary, Jesse is in an accident and declared dead.

Flash forward two years Emma is back in her hometown, working a job she swore she never would and FINALLY has a chance of love with Sam, the boy that had a crush on her back in high school. The rug is pulled from under them when Jesse is found alive. What is she to do?

Right away, I knew who I wanted Emma to end up with. It was so obvious to me that she was meant to be with this certain person that I couldn’t think clearly. The book made me think how fate has a way of molding your life and changing the outcome. Things have to happen for a reason, right? I will admit, my heart broke so many times as I didn’t know where it was going, if she was going to end up with the ending I selfishly wanted.

In all intents and purposes, this is a mild love triangle. The author went about it in such a realistic way that will have your heart breaking and have you doing some sort of deep breathing exercises. You will definitely feel not just for Emma, but Jesse and Sam.   How can you pick between your husband who you thought was your one true love and the man who has shown you that there can be a HEA after losing said true love? I guess you’ll have to read it to find out.

I laughed, teared up, and fell in love all in one book. The writing was beautiful and will have you till the last word. This is definitely a top recommendation.
