When Jacob “Dax” Daxton returns home from war, he has to fight a new battle – the one to find his place in the world. The man who normally has a clear path to victory surrounded by brothers in combat is suddenly lost and alone. After meeting Beckett Ridge, a bearded tattoo artist, Dax’s journey begins winding down an unexpected path.

Still reeling from events that shook his foundation, Beck has never been part of anything meaningful. Now faced with responsibilities foreign and daunting, Dax’s broken spirit mends Beck in ways he never even knew he was destroyed.

As both struggle to find balance, they are healed by the comfort they find in one other. On the other side of chaos, they hope to find themselves On Solid Ground.

Alexis says…

On Solid Ground was my first foray into the works of Melissa Collins and right now I’m metaphorically kicking myself in the ass. How could I have waited this long before I started a book of hers? Well, better late than never, right?

You know that book that makes you FEEL EVERYTHING? Makes you want to forgot you actually have a day job? Well, this is a prime example of why I love to read. This book gave me goose bumps, shortness of breath, tears, and full-on swooning with a hint of laughter sprinkled in.

Both Dax and Beck could not be more different but in the end, they both need each other.

Need. I need him to calm me; he needs me to steady him. I need him to rouse me back to life; he needs me to remind him that his is a good life, not one of meaningless nothingness.”

Dax is a war veteran suffering from PTSD. Once he returns home, from war, he realizes that it’s not really his home. Struggling with his homosexuality and the emotional scars left from war, he decides to move to California to find himself.

Beck is the part-owner of a tattoo parlor that Dax meets when he goes into get a tattoo. Unlike Dax, Beck is out and has no qualms about it. He also has a lot on his plate as it relates to him family.

“Let me have this. Just let me have this and then we can tell ourselves all the lies about how it’ll never work.”

Once these two meet, their chemistry was palpable but had an almost innocent feeling to it. Both of these characters have gone through the ringer and in the end find that they need each other to live the life they both deserve. On Solid Ground was a harrowing tale of two people finding each other in their darkest light and setting each other free. This book makes me confident that things happen for a reason.

I want to say that I have read a slew of M/M books and none of them prepared me for the onslaught of emotions I would feel while reading this book. You see, most other M/M books, are strictly erotica (or at least the ones I’ve read). Sure, I love a Skokie read (Three Girls’ term for hot read) don’t get me wrong, but I always want more emotion. Melissa did a tremendous job capturing Dax’s PTSD as well as all the emotion that came from it.

To say I loved this book was an understatement. I will get on my soapbox and yell to everyone that they must read this one immediately. Also, if you’ve never read an M/M book, I think this would be a fabulous starting point.

About Melissa Collins

Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.
