I fancy myself a purveyor of truth, a sifter of lies, a cutter of bullshit. It’s not a gift, but rather, all skill, honed to a razor’s edge after one too many trips down the rabbit hole.

Some may dismiss my talent as misplaced and misguided cynicism, but they’d be wrong. Cliches about hope and faith in mankind are concocted unicorn farts, an effort to keep the dreamers dreaming. Experiences don’t lie—people do.

While I’m not proud of the circumstances that led me to this way of thinking, I respect the journey. The road to enlightenment can be dark and foreboding, but the destination makes it all worthwhile.

But funny thing about the past—it’s a defiant child refusing to stay in time out. No matter how deeply buried, it can always pop up when least expected, and sink its fucking claws into the flesh of your heart. No, not my heart—I no longer have one. I foolishly gave it away years ago, but I still feel the ripping in my chest as I fist the crumpled note left on my porch.

I’ve avoided this day, ran from it, for the past eight years.
And still we meet again.

But to truly understand … to feel my dread and fear my future as I do, it’s important to know what happened in my past.

Or who…

My name is Marlo Rivers, and this is my story of corrupted love.

Stacia says…

J.A. DeRouen is an author that not only continues to grow in her writing and storytelling skills with each book, but she has once again proven why she is one of my favorites! She delivered a heartbreaking, emotionally charged story and Low Over High was nothing like what I expected it to be and a whole lot more than I anticipated!

Marlo “Low” Rivers isn’t your typical female lead character. She doesn’t believe in romance and hearts and flowers type of things most woman do-because she has seen the aftermath when it doesn’t work out. Marlo is sassy, straight-up honest, and very cynical-but there is a reason and a broken heart behind her way of thinking. We were first introduced to Marlo in Hope Over Fear and then in each book in the Over series. With her smart mouth and take no prisoners attitude, she became one of my favorites and I couldn’t wait to learn more about her!

“Experiences don’t lie- people do. The dreamers of the world would do well to remember that lesson.”

Low over High starts eight years in the past with Marlo leaving her home in Texas for the first time to head to Orleans Academy in New Orleans. We get a glimpse at the wide-eyed optimist that Marlo once was- before everything changed.

Everett “Ever” Montgomery seems like your typical rebellious asshole on the surface, but he really is so much more. He’s a good friend, a good brother, he’s responsible and the poor guy carries so much of the world (and all its problems) on his shoulders!

“Marlo is all the things I’m not, but everthing I want to be. I can do this with her. I know I can, and I want it more than anything.”

I loved the whole enemies to friends (“friendly foes”) to lovers thing happening between Marlo and Ever. They definitely knew how to push each other’s buttons and their romance was a slow build that didn’t feel rushed at all. At first I wasn’t sure where the book was headed, but once it grabbed me- I was completely absorbed and didn’t want to put it down! I also have to mention the amazing descriptions of New Orleans in this book. I have never been, but I felt like I was right there with the characters walking around the French Quarter and eating all that yummy food. I see a trip to NOLA in my future!

Low over High is part of a duet and the second book will be out in January. Some of the characters from the previous books in the Over series are mentioned in this book and I highly recommend them all. However, this book can be read as a standalone!
