Series: How To #1
Genres: Young Adult

Zoe has a great pair of legs, perky boobs, and wears exactly what she needs to show it all off. She works hard for the easy sleazy ‘you only wish you were me’ reputation, burying who she really is—an all-out nerd. The only time Zoe gets to be herself is when she hides under her comforter to read X-Men comics, sending jealousy stabs at everyone who attends Comic-Con. Keeping up her popular rep is too important, and she’s so damn insecure to care about the consequences. But when Zoe’s sister takes her car for a ‘crash and burn into a tree’ joyride, her parents get her a replacement. A manual. Something she doesn’t know how to operate, but her next door neighbor Zak sure as heck does. Zak’s a geek to the core, shunned by everyone in school for playing Dungeons and Dragons at lunch and wearing “Use the Force” t-shirts. And Zoe’s got it bad for the boy. Only Zak doesn’t want Popular Zoe. He wants Geek Zoe. She has to shove her insecurities and the fear of dropping a few rungs on the social ladder aside to prove to Zak who she really is and who she wants to be… if she can figure it out herself.

Leary says…

This book got me out of a MASSIVE book funk, I seriously picked up probably 10 books within a week and read to 20% and stopped. I finally realized I needed something a bit different. When this happens I usually turn to YA or paranormal books, this time around I felt the need for a sweet YA book and I found that in How to Date a Nerd. There were many times throughout the book that I wanted to slap Zoe across the face, the only thing that stopped me from yelling at her (besides me looking like a crazy person) is the reminder of the hell she went through to make her change her identity. Zoe is absolutely desperate throughout the book to get Zak’s attention but she also doesn’t want her ‘friends’ to know she wants Zak, it would be social suicide since he’s the nerdiest of the nerds. No one knows that he used to be her best friend, is her neighbor, and that she has the BIGGEST crush on him and she’s determined to keep it all in the dark.

“:Yeah. I’m a total closeted nerd.”

“I:’m not cool with pity glares in the hallways, painful jabs, and social scars. No thanks. It’s much easier to keep my true nature hidden beneath layers of eyeliner, skimpy outfits, and even I must admit to myself, a rockin’ body.”

I couldn’t get enough of Zoe and Zak’s interactions, my heart totally broke for both of them throughout the story and I wanted to scream numerous times at Zoe to stop caring what everyone in school thought of her, if they were truly her friends they wouldn’t laugh at her if she used Star Wars references, went to Comic-Con or if she dated the nerdiest guy at their school. I loved when Zoe would bring out the ‘real’ Zoe and we would get a peek into her total quirkiness. How to Date a Nerd had me laughing so many times at the same time it was squeezing my heart. I kept waiting and waiting for things to finally click in Zoe’s head and for her to get back to who she really is so that she can FINALLY be with Zak…the only problem, is Zak going to forgive Zoe for all the years of her ignoring him and dropping him like a bad habit when she decided to change who she is? I sure as hell hoped so with every turn of the page.  The anticipation killed me and trust me, it will kill you too. I just desperately wanted for the world to see Nerd Zoe and for her to finally have her Luke Skywalker. You will laugh at all the Star Wars and many comic book references throughout the book. I’m not much of a Star Wars fan nor do I read many comic books but I totally loved it. Throughout the book you also get introduced to many other characters, her sister drove me freaking insane…I knew she was TROUBLE…but thankfully she gets her own book. Check back in tomorrow for my review of How to Seduce a Band Geek, book 2 in the How To series! signature-leary
