“Do you ever let go, storm girl?” he asked. “Ever lose control? Ever surrender?”

“Never,” I whispered. “I never surrender.”

A smile of both promise and warning curved his beautiful mouth.

“You will.”

Kelsey and Archer embark on a intense, exhilarating affair. But soon their differences and private battles encroach on their desire, and Kelsey discovers she is caught in a storm she can’t control...

BREAK THE SKY is a standalone Spiral of Bliss spin-off novel from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Nina Lane.

Alexis says…

I want to start off this review to state that I literally stayed up past my bedtime 3 nights in a row because I did not want to put this book down. When it got to the last 10%, I debated about putting it down for oh I don’t know, maybe 10 seconds before I plowed right through it. I honestly did not want this book to end it was simply that freaking good. I love, love, freaking love Nina’s other series, The Spiral of Bliss trilogy and truth be told was a bit nervous for this one. I mean, how can you live up to Professor West and his Beauty? Well, don’t fret because this book was better than amazing. Nina wrote such a beautiful love story that will have you staying up past your bedtime to read.

You will remember Kelsey as Dean’s friend of many years and she is also a professor at King’s University. After disappointing news and a setback from her Spiral Project (love this tie-in), Kelsey finds herself at a bar on the outskirts of town where she feasts her eyes on a fine specimen. Though the two never leave the bar and don’t exchange names, they are still thinking of each other days later. The chemistry from that scene alone could’ve set my Kindle on fire. When Kelsey meets the stranger again she quickly finds out that he is Dean’s brother, Archer. Now, you will also remember Archer as Dean’s brother who has a serious bad-boy aura about him (yes ladies, he’s totally delicious). With much convincing, Archer talks Kelsey into a fling while he is in Mirror Lakes.

“I do have one rule, “ he said.

“Just one?”

“What is it?” I asked.

He shot me a very wicked smile. “Your body belongs to me.”

I liked Kelsey from the other books, but after the first chapter of this book, I totally loved her. She is this super-serious chick who wants to be held with the same regard as the other male professors at the University and really cares about what other people think of her, including Dean. I totally get why she is that way, but I knew that Archer would be able to bring out a different side of her.  She is also wickedly smart and literally chases storms. What Kelsey didn’t realize was that the biggest storm to uproot her entire life was Archer.

“Don’t be scared storm girl”, he said. “I’ll protect you.”

Archer has had it rough, I mean really rough. He has never felt as if he could ever live up to his older brother Dean, but then, not many could. He never felt like he had a family and was pretty much the black sheep of the family. He pretty much used that as his excuse to drink, do drugs, sleep around, finish school, etc. But it’s definitely the shield he uses because when you get to know the real Archer, he’s not like the person he pretends to be.

“Archer was right. With him, I was everything I was.”

I have to hand it to Nina, she literally is the reigning queen of the hottest, sexiest, but yet at the same time, emotional love scenes. Kelsey and Archer together are explosive together. They are like this frenzied storm of hot sexiness that is off the Fujita Scale (tornado speak). I think part of it was that they were so different from each other in so many ways but yet fit so well together.  They each made the other more confident in their own shoes. Archer brings out a more fun, more risqué version of Kelsey. In turn, Kelsey shows Archer that she is worthy of him, that he is a good guy or in my book, the best guy for her.

“I never wanted that tornado to stop. I wanted to stay on the road with you forever, chasing storms.”

I’ve met Nina before and was a total freak, I may have embarrassed not only myself but one of my blog partners. I can only imagine how I’m going to react the next time I see her. Nina is one of the reasons why I love to read and blog. She is an author who needs to be recognized as one of the best authors of this generation and she is an author I recommend to everyone.  There is not another author who can piece together words and make them into such perfectly woven love stories. Thank you Nina for sharing Archer and Kelsey’s story; their love story truly is the perfect storm.

After working on the house all day Sunday, I called Kelsey the following morning. I had a limited time with her. I wasn’t going to waste it by dragging things out. Especially now that I’d had a taste of her explosive heat. A taste of the fire that melted all her ice.

“Hello?” Her voice was scotch and honey.

“What’re you wearing?” I asked.

“A frown.”

“Mmm. Sexy.”

“Archer, I’m at work,” she said tartly.

“In a classroom?”

“No. I’m in my office.”

“So tell me what you’re wearing.”  There was a pause. Taut energy crackled over the line.

“Archer, I had rules because I have boundaries—”

“One rule,” I told her. “No boundaries. Not with me.”

“Or what?” she challenged.

“Or you don’t get fucked.”

She inhaled sharply. “You are so crude.”

“Uh huh. And you like it. What are you wearing?”

“A suit.” She sounded cross. “A tailored, gray wool suit.”

“And underneath?”

“A blue, Brooks Brothers dress shirt.”

“And under that?”

“I’m not going to tell you.”

“I dare you to tell me,” I said.

“I do not accept the dare.”

“Then I double-dog dare you.”

She gave a muffled laugh, like she was trying not to. “What are you wearing?”

“Jeans and T-shirt. I’m all hot and sweaty from working.”

“Really?” Now she sounded intrigued. “Are you wearing a tool belt?”

“I was.”

“Tell me about your sexy underwear,” I said.

“You’ve got a bad attitude, lady. You need to be spanked as well as fucked.”

She made a noise that sounded like a half groan, half laugh. “You do go all out, don’t you?”

“You haven’t seen anything yet. You ever been spanked?”

There was a second of silence, as if she was thinking.

“No.” She almost sounded surprised. “I haven’t.”

“First time for everything. What color is your bra?”

A sigh came over the line. “Blue, okay? Dark blue silk with white trim.”

“Matching panties?”

“Are they wet?”

“God, Archer. Yes.”

I rubbed my erection through my jeans. “What about your shoes?”

“Navy pumps with three-inch heels.”

“I’ll be at your place at seven,” I said. “I want you waiting in your heels and lingerie.

Nothing else.”

“And if I’m not?” she replied, putting some of that ire back into her voice.

“You’ll be in trouble.”

“So if I am, I avoid… um, punishment?”

I laughed. “Nice try, storm girl. But you’re getting spanked no matter what.”
