Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself…be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.

And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated—and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power…on the field, and off.

Casey Says…

I was so excited when I heard that J.R. Ward was writing a spin off from her Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) series. Not only did it mean that we would be able to continue to peak into the lives of the brothers but it meant that I would get to read more awesomeness from this author! When I got my book in the mail from the publisher it was wrapped in the signature black paper and accompanied by her invitation and a RED (Blood) Hershey’s “KISS”. I was already in love……sighhhh and I DID NOT want to unwrap the book, however I knew the goodness that was waiting inside and dove right in like a mad woman.

This new series opens up centered around the BDB training center and bringing in new recruits. It focuses on not only a new couple (Paradise and Craeg) but also on a couple from the legacy BDB (Butch and Marissa).

We met Paradise briefly in the prior BDB series; she is the daughter of an aristocrat and is held in high esteem. She is determined to join the BDB training program- she has a plan and wants to learn to defend herself against the attacks the species has fallen victim to lately. It is here in the program that she meets Craeg. He is from a working class family who was lost to the raids. Craeg sees the program as not only a way out but a way to avenge his family.

“Do you like playing with fire, girl?” he growled. Because if you keep looking at me like that, I’m going to burn you to the ground.”

Butch leads the new recruit program along with several other brothers so the stories tied in and flowed really well. Marissa is his mate and runs Safe Place. Butch and Marissa are having communication issues; she is still dealing with issues from her brother as seen in past books.

“You and I are not going to survive long term, regardless of love or bonding, if you keep airbrushing things. If I keep airbrushing things. It’s not a good strategy for us—and if this makes you feel like you’re on the spot? As if I’m giving you an ultimatum? I don’t care. If anything gets in the way of our relationship, anything, I will mow that shit down—even if it is you.”

The BDB series is one of my favorite paranormal series that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Although this new series focuses on a new set of characters, being able to glimpse the life that the legacy brothers are leading AND getting new characters is pure bliss for any lover of J.R. Wards original series.
