Hate: to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward.
Scarlet Jennings, the preacher’s daughter who lived across the street, was a royal, uptight pain in my ass. When she looked at me, she saw a college quarterback asshole with rocks for brains, but she didn’t have a single word for what was happening between us.
When we were forced to ride together every single day that summer, there was definitely some dislike going on. Extreme hostility was a given, considering that we were spending so much time together in close quarters.
One night of bed-breaking, body-shattering, lose-your-voice-from-screaming passion had surprised us both, but it was only just the beginning…
You know that funny happy dance (mine’s more of an Elaine from Seinfeld sort of dance) that you do when you read a fantastic book?! Well, you should’ve seen me busting a move after Beguiling.
I devoured Alex Lucian’s first book Tempting within a day and was eagerly waiting for Beguiling to come out. Now let me just say that Beguiling is a completely different book. Sure it has a few scenes with Adele from Tempting but it can definitely be read as a standalone. It has more of a lighter tone then Tempting and may I say that I loved it?!
Enemies to friends is one of my favorite types of love stories. There’s the tension, the angst, the heated exchanges, the awkwardness that gets in the way. But when they finally hook up and it’s totally explosive…well that is the best. So keep that in mind when you pick up Beguiling because it’s between the pages.
Scarlett and Leo are neighbors who used to be friends. Once high school hit, their friendship dissolved. Due to an unfortunate albeit a bit funny situation Leo is without a set of wheels for the summer and needs a ride every day to school. Enter Scarlett’s mom to the rescue when she volunteers her daughter to be his chauffeur as she has classes at the university every day.
They both have their differences; him being the quarterback and her being the preacher’s daughter. Leo is a bit more outgoing where Scarlett is a bit more reserved. After a drunken one-night stand it’s apparent that these two are a perfect match in many ways. When Leo finds Scarlett’s bucket list he so kindly offers himself as a willing participant to check off the things she has on the list.
One of the most important things in a book is chemistry between the two characters. Leo is something so out of this world-he’s the ultimate sweetheart who always ends up with bad luck when it comes to girls. Scarlett being so reserved needs that extra boost to get her out of her shell and Leo helps her overcome all that. From the beginning of the book until the very end there is such a change in her in a positive way. Their banter, flirting, and all-around smile-inducing scenes made this such an enjoyable read.
The story was fun, sweet, and oh-my-word so off the charts HOT. I mean, at times I needed to fan myself from the sexiness overload that Leo was putting out there. I laughed out loud a lot too. The epilogue was really wonderful and you know I love a good epilogue.
Beguiling is definitely one of my top recommendations for a great New Adult love story. It’s a bit forbidden, with a dash of humor, and lots of hotness!
