Love is a circus
"Every day,” he says lowly, “I hold a person’s life in my hands. The circus is based one-hundred percent off trust. I give it all to someone, and they give it all to me.”
The best aerial technique won’t land 21-year-old Thora James her dream role in Amour—a sexy new acrobatic show on the Vegas strip. Thora knows she’s out of her element the second she meets Amour’s leading performer. Confident, charming and devilishly captivating, 26-year-old Nikolai Kotova lives up to his nickname as the “God of Russia.”
When Thora unknowingly walks into the crosshairs of Nikolai’s after-show, her audition process begins way too soon. Unprofessional. That’s what Nik calls their “non-existent” relationship. It’s not like Thora can avoid him. For one, they may be partners in the future--acrobaticpartners, that is. But getting closer to Nik means diving deeper into sin city and into his dizzying world.
Thora wants to perform with him, but when someone like Nikolai attracts the spotlight wherever he goes—Thora fears that she’s destined to be just background to his spellbinding show.
This sexy and exhilarating New Adult Romance can best be described as Cirque du Soleil meets the steamy, athletic romance of Center Stage.
I’m not going to lie when I say that the cover alone made me want to read this book. Then I went ahead and read the synopsis and saw the movie Center Stage mentioned. So basically once this book was released, I rushed to finish the book I was reading to dive right in.
Thora James is 21-years old chasing her dreams of landing a spot in the show Amour in Las Vegas. She literally drops out of school and goes straight to Las Vegas to audition. Unfortunately, her plan does not go as planned. There are some bumps in the road that she has to overcome. One of them being, Nikolai Kotova, the 26-year old “God of Russia”. The minute they meet, sparks fly and he ultimately sets her onto the path of self-discovery.
“Vot moe serce.”
Amour Amour is the ultimate story about finding yourself while achieving your dreams. Though Thora does not nail her first audition, she ultimately does not let her shutdown and run back home. I think the first rejection is a blessing in disguise as she learns who she is and what she wants to achieve long-term. Her perseverance is nothing short of inspiring and lends itself to showing people that they shouldn’t give up on their dreams. Even with her parents and her best friend Shay (who I could not stand) was trying to knock down her aspirations, she stood strong.
“I’d help you every day so that you could see a better tomorrow. I will never give you less than that.”
Nikolai is an enigma that every little glimpse into his soul made me gasp. He is the silent brooding type that loves deeply. He was born into the circus world and his brothers and sister are also performers. He is also beyond his years as he is also raising his younger siblings. When he offers to help train Thora, I was a bit nervous to see how it would turn out. But he was part of the reason that Thora began to believe in herself more. The more t we learned about Nikolai, the more I fell in love with him. He was such a great hero and will make absolutely make your heart hurt.
“He’s made me appreciated myself more, love myself more, and as a result, I’ve come to see him as more than just a great athlete, a charismatic performer.”
Thora and Nikolai’s relationship is an integral part of the book but there is also more to the story. From the begin inning, both said they would chose the circus before love. Just thinking about how their relationship progressed and blossomed is actually making me tear up a bit. The reader will also learn a lot about the circus and I will admit that I found it incredibly fascinating.
“Don’t love me more than your dreams, myshka. Because I love you too much to let you give them up for me.”
Lastly, a great book wouldn’t be complete without great secondary characters. I hope the authors decide to have a spin-off with some of the characters.
This was my first book by Krista and Becca Ritchie, I was blown away by the writing. I will definitely be picking up another book of theirs soon! If you love Center Stage or Dirty Dancing, you will love this book!!
