What happens after The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie?
This is not a romantic comedy.
This is not a fairytale.
This is not what you're expecting.
Lies, secrets, betrayal.
Marriage, divorce, sex.
Love, heartbreak, money.
Happily Ever After comes in many forms.
A WAY TO GET BY is the story of how Brenda and Eddie found theirs.
I can’t believe this is my first book by T. Torrest! I know, I know-I need to get with the times and read her other ones!!
I’ll admit I read the lyrics to “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” by Billy Joel AFTER I read the book. Not knowing gave me a glimpse to the genius that T. Torrest is for building a book around a song. Seriously, this book is such a unique and cool concept.
“That was the thing about Eddie. He could love me and break my heart all at the same time.”
Brenda is in my opinion, a very unlikeable heroine. She has her mind set on the finer things in life and Eddie as hard as he tries cannot provide what she needs. I really did not like her…there I said it. She just came across as vain, self-centered and lacked the motivation to do anything to better her life. But I never questioned her love that she had for Eddie, I knew deep down it was there.
Eddie on the other hand really just broke my heart. I really think he meant well in most situations and just wanted to provide everything under the moon for Brenda. His unwavering love for her knew no bounds and was evident throughout their love story.
This book was exactly what I was looking for. It was a book I did not want to put down-it kept me addicted until the very end. The writing was flawless and another reason why I loved this one so much. This story is told in dual POVs through the late 70s and 80s. Though I was born in the early 80s, I can definitely relate to some of the things that were mentioned.
“Nobody smiles like Bren. Nobody laughs harder. Nobody looks finer. Nobody fucks better. Nobody loves me like she does.”
The love, heart break, and angst was perfect. I think I’m just floored by how the whole story came about and I would never spoil the awesomeness of Eddie and Brenda’s story. Bravo to T. Torrest for penning such a UNIQUE love story.
Can pure love outweigh everything else? <–Read the book!
